Teacher’s Role:
---A Response to Tan Dinghua's Comment

I think what a teacher can do in such a fast-paced society is to arm him/herself as well as possible, while high-tech is definitely one of those areas that we need to know more about. As educators, our duty is, first of all, to educate the students. But to be an excellent educator, we need to learn more about new technology so that we can apply them to our teaching to make it more effective and efficient, and at the same time to meet the students’ needs and also to let them realize we are not out of date and are trying to catch up with them. With this understanding established between students and the teacher, teaching result would be more satisfactory.

Therefore, I know what you mean is that teachers should be updated all the time without being kept out of the fashion.

I agree with you to some extent but not totally. We need to update ourselves to keep up with the time. But we have a lot more to do beside the new technology. For me I can only learn those whcih can help my teaching and working, but for others I don't think I have the time and energy to do.

I have to say that I agree with Tan, after all, teachers are also just human beings. We can not know all since our attention is so limited. So I think we had better concentrate on some certain aspects, otherwise we may be laymen in any field.

Dear Tan and Ice,
Both your reasons are reasonable, but I still insist my opinion that in order not to be left out by the society, a teacher, no matter how old or young she/he is, she/he must keep on learning. In the past several years, life-long learning/education to a teacher simply meant one should update her/his knowledge of particular area frequently, while nowadays it seems that besides one's professional knowledge, mastering of high-tech knowledge becomes a neccessity. To be an excellent teacher of 21st century, we have no choice but to work harder than ever before in order to follow the footsteps of the new world.

However, we do have our own choices: we can choose to stick to the old teaching method or choose to corporate high-tech into our classroom. The point is whether your not striving ahead in your old teaching method work well. It it does, then everything is fine. But I do suspect it will.

One famous professor from the Foreign Languages School of Beining Normal University once openly expressed his strong objection of using computer. He refused to use computer to write his papers or anything else. I quite understood him then. But now I feel sorry for him because it seems that one just cannot work nowadays without working on a computer. Do you see what I mean? Facing high-tech, being afraid or ignoring it is useless, what we can do is try our best to catch up. This is esp. true for a teacher. My experience tells me it is never an easy and comfortable life to choose to be a teacher. To be a top teacher of 21st century, we have to suffer more pains in order to improve ourselves and realize our value.
